Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean. It lies east of the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, from which it is separated by the Palk Strait, a strip of shallow water
28.8 km across at its narrowest point. Sri Lanka is about the size of Tasmania, with an area of 65,610 square km, including 868 square km of inland waters.
Sri Lanka is a lower-middle income developing country with about one quarter of the population living below the poverty line. Two decades of civil conflict between the Government
of Sri Lanka and the LTTE have exacerbated poverty and resulted in major inequities between regions. Some 460,000 civilians are displaced and living in refugee camps in Sri
Lanka's North and East.
The regional imbalance of economic growth has also created major socio-economic problems in rural areas. More than 75% people still live in rural areas and depend on
traditional agricultural base lifestyles. There is little focus on rural industrial development within the country's economic development programs and strategies.
