After the tsunami of 2004 devastated Indonesia, World Hope started formulating plans to help the country rebuild in substantive, lasting ways. The result of this desire led to the construction of a state-of-the-art, earthquake-proof agricultural high school on the island of Nias.

Lush yet agriculturally underdeveloped, Nias has grown increasingly reliant upon imported food. The idea behind the school is to train young, local leaders in food cultivation, processing and preservation techniques to increase the island’s productivity, lessen its dependence on outside resources, and even learn to export their new found surplus. According to students, families and even the local government, the school has been a tremendous success thus far.

This high school is providing essential training to students, providing them skills that will enable them to provide for their families. Some of the graduates tell us they plan to go on to college on Sumatra island, while many have told us that they would like to stay on the island of Nias to teach their people what they’ve learned at the school. Others have already found local employment in the food processing industry.

The teachers’ subsidy and scholarship funds have enabled the school to maintain a higher quality of instruction and offer opportunities to families in greatest need.

The scholarships we provide especially help seniors who would not have otherwise been able to afford all the testing required by the government.

Our school here also has a computer room with 8 operational computers; not bad for our remote island location.This school is meeting a tremendous need here on the poor, earthquake-prone island of Nias. The kids need your support to keep it going.
