Our Work

Traffickers and abusers usually target vulnerable people, using lies to prey on those desperate for a better life. We recognize that in order to combat issues of trafficking in persons and sexual and gender-based violence, it is necessary to work at all levels of society.

Our community-led, locally tailored solutions around the world include programs such as anti-trafficking hotlines, protection services, advocacy efforts, gender trainings, and after-care.

We work to lay the groundwork for healthy, private sector collaborations at the grassroots and global trading levels. We support the start-up of businesses that can help people out of poverty while providing a service that everyone needs—like growing food, producing power, and improving accessing to clean water.

Some of our community-led enterprise programs include a mushroom cultivation project in Cambodia, greenhouses in Sierra Leone, and a Solar Powered Water Desalination and Distribution Center in Haiti.

WHI was instrumental in the fight to end the 2014/2015 Ebola (EVD) outbreak in Sierra Leone. In November 2015, Sierra Leone was declared Ebola-free and since then WHI has been working to provide assistance to Ebola survivors through Community Care Centers, education, and more.

Our work includes many other market-driven solutions, though, such as our Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance program, ambulance services, Helping Babies Breathe (which trained 3,615 health care workers in 2018), Enable the Children, and so much more.

Whether it's through early childhood development, child education, family education, adult education, or something else yet, we believe that education is the key to transforming communities and reducing poverty, suffering, and injustice worldwide.

Educated citizens are citizens who are empowered to act as advocates for economic and social change. An educated population promotes a better-educated nation and an improved social structure. It's also why we work so hard to help students stay in school - by building wells in schools and empowering families to afford and value education.

To maximize the investment impact of a child sponsorship, we adapt our solutions to poverty, suffering, and injustice to each country or region where we work—whether in Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Liberia, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, or Zambia.

We address the holistic needs of children and their communities. Success is measured not only by whether the child is attending school, but our overall impact on the region’s food security, access to clean water, reduction in sickness, improvements in teacher training, and the availability of school supplies.
